- A Mitsubishi G4M bomber plunges towards the water after being shot down during an engagement with Fighting Squadron (VF) 3 defending the carrier Lexington (CV 2) of Rabaul on February 20, 1942, seventy-two years ago today. For his actions that day, Lieutenant Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare received the Medal of Honor.
The March meeting of the Missouri Aviation Historical Society took place on March 27th, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. This month’s meeting was focused on the life and impact of the late Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare. Events included a showing/presentation of a 2007 documentary on O’Hare’s life, produced for KETC by Jim Kirchherr. A question session immediately followed with remarks and interesting commentary by O’Hare’s niece Judy Foster, who also brought along years of memorabilia for display. In addition members of the Spirit Airshow team (Including our very own president) gave an update on the flying acts and volunteer positions needed, along with giving the official debut for the 2014 poster. A special thanks to Jim, Judy’s family, and for everyone else who packed the hangar!
